It was never intended to be fine porcelain or perfectly formed. Pieces were often thick and coarse, with pitting, uneven shapes, firing irregularities, and other imperfections that today form an important part of their distinctive character.

This pretty trio is a wonderful example, with lively hand-painted decoration in cobalt blue and burnt orange accented by touches of copper and pink luster against a white background.
