19th Century French Rococo Carved Walnut Secretary Chest with Cherub
A magnificent 19th-century French Rococo-style secretary chest of drawers, crafted from beautiful walnut and exceptionally decorated with elaborate hand carving across the entire front.
Front and center is a wonderfully carved cherub, surrounded by deeply carved Rococo ornamentation that gives the secretary its distinctive theatrical presence. Beautiful walnut grain remains visible throughout, providing a warm contrast to the abundance of carved detail.
The secretary retains its original brass pulls along with a working lock and key. The writing surface folds down to create a practical desk while the chest below provides useful drawer storage, combining an impressive decorative presence with functionality.
Rococo design developed from the Baroque tradition and became known for its exuberant ornamentation, flowing curves, asymmetry, and theatrical decoration. This secretary embraces that spirit beautifully, from its sculptural carving to the prominent cherub motif.
At just 32" wide, it offers considerable visual impact without requiring the space of a larger secretary. A wonderful statement piece for a bedroom, library, study, hallway, or collected interior.
Condition
Good antique condition.
There is age-appropriate wear throughout, along with signs of solid old repairs where the desk section joins the main body, as shown in image #9. The retention chain is a later replacement.
Overall, this remains a solid piece of good-quality walnut furniture with exceptional character. The lock is working and the key is present.
