19th Century American Mahogany Secretary Desk with Blind Cupboard Top
A handsome 19th-century American Victorian-style secretary desk, constructed from solid mahogany and arranged in three practical sections: a blind cupboard top, a central fold-out writing section, and a two-drawer lower base.
The upper section features paneled double doors opening to reveal a generous central cubby with an upper shelf, flanked by smaller storage compartments. The concealed interior provides useful space for books, documents, or treasured objects while maintaining the clean, architectural appearance of the exterior.
The central secretary section includes a shallow front drawer and a hinged writing slope that opens to reveal a green felt writing surface. Beneath the slope is hidden storage together with three small interior drawers, creating a compact and practical workspace. Campaign-style brass handles add a handsome decorative detail to this section.
Below, the substantial base features paneled sides and two large drawers fitted with beautifully carved grape-and-leaf handles. Small bracket feet complete the traditional silhouette.
Lovingly and sympathetically restored in the past, the piece has retained a warm aged mahogany patina while remaining highly functional. At 36" wide, it offers an impressive amount of storage and workspace without requiring an overly large footprint, making it ideal for a study, library, bedroom, or living room.
Condition
Very good antique condition.
The secretary has been sympathetically restored and remains strong, sturdy, and structurally sound. The drawers operate smoothly, and the mahogany retains a lovely warm aged patina with only minor age-appropriate wear, marks, losses, and imperfections.
There are age-related cracks to the cupboard back and to the bottom of the lower drawer, but these do not affect the stability or functionality of the piece.
The desk and cupboard retain their original locks and wooden escutcheons. A key is present but does not operate the locks and is used only to assist with opening and closing the cupboard doors.
