Herts Brothers Aesthetic Movement Burled Walnut & Marble Top Dresser, c.1880
A striking late 19th-century Aesthetic Movement five-drawer dresser attributed to Herts Brothers of Broadway, New York, dating to circa 1880.
This exceptional piece is richly detailed throughout, combining beautiful burled walnut veneers with intricate carved decoration, ebonized accents, decorative brass drawer pulls, and a substantial marble top. The tall mirrored back is framed by elaborate architectural and floral carving, giving the dresser an impressive presence and making it a particularly fine example of American Aesthetic Movement furniture.
Herts Brothers were active as furniture designers and interior decorators in New York City from approximately 1876 to 1908. The firm produced furnishings for a number of prominent New York buildings and interiors, and examples of their work can be found in museum collections today.
Beyond its decorative appeal, the dresser offers excellent storage with five generously sized drawers and a broad marble-topped surface. At 84" tall, it makes a substantial statement in a bedroom, dressing room, or other interior where its elaborate craftsmanship can be fully appreciated.
Condition
Very good antique condition with age-appropriate wear consistent with a piece dating to circa 1880.
There are various marks, small losses, checking, splitting, and other imperfections throughout, all contributing to the authentic character of the piece. There is some aging around the edges of the mirror, minor staining inside the top drawer, and a missing section from the far-right carved rose above the mirror.
Despite these age-related imperfections, the dresser remains solid, substantial, and well constructed.
