A rare and beautifully proportioned antique mahogany coat closet, offering an elegant combination of refined craftsmanship, compact scale, and practical storage.
The tailored crown is enriched with intricate dentil molding and accented by carved rosettes and bellflower motifs, creating a handsome architectural presence without overwhelming the piece. Paneled sides and a single paneled door add depth and structure, while the decorative brass escutcheon, working lock, and original key provide both function and period character.
Inside, the cupboard offers an open hanging compartment fitted with two substantial brass double hooks. A series of ready-made holes along the interior sides, visible in photograph #11, also provides the option to add shelving if desired, making the piece adaptable for coats, hats, linens, or other household storage.
Raised on a simple plinth base, this beautifully scaled cupboard is especially well suited to an entryway, vestibule, hallway, or bedroom where full-sized wardrobes may be too large. Its compact footprint, rich mahogany finish, and thoughtful detailing make it both useful and highly decorative.
Interestingly, the plinth has been carefully notched to fit neatly around a baseboard, as shown in image #8, suggesting it may have been custom made for a particular home or thoughtfully modified later in its life to sit flush against the wall.

Condition
Very good antique condition.
The closet is solid, sturdy, and well constructed, with age-appropriate wear consistent with long use. Marks, small losses, checking, splits, and other imperfections are present throughout and contribute to its authentic antique character and charm.
Photograph #10 shows examples of the wear and surface marks associated with the age of the piece. The door, lock, and key remain functional, and the interior brass hooks are secure.
