English Oak & Mahogany Country China Cabinet, c.1880
A wonderfully characterful late 19th-century English china cabinet, imported from England and dating to circa 1880. The unusual combination of warm oak and contrasting mahogany gives this substantial piece an elegant yet relaxed country feel.
The upper hutch features a pair of large antique glazed doors fitted with chunky Victorian glass knobs. Inside are four fixed wooden shelves with hooks for hanging cups and jugs, while the back has been lined with decorative paper resembling the texture of traditional hessian or burlap.
Below, two drawers sit above a pair of generous cupboard doors distinguished by handsome shield-shaped mahogany panels. The cupboard opens to reveal substantial additional storage with an interior shelf.
The years have given the timber a wonderfully worn, rustic patina that brings warmth and individuality to the piece. Although originally intended for displaying china and tableware, its generous glazed upper section also makes it an excellent choice as a bookcase, display cabinet, or collector's cabinet.
At over 6 1/2 feet tall, this is an impressive piece of English country furniture offering a great combination of display space, concealed storage, and authentic Victorian character.
Condition
Good antique condition.
The cabinet is solid, strong, and sturdy with expected age-appropriate wear, marks, and imperfections throughout. Wear is more noticeable around the base, and there is some minor age-related splitting to the doors. These naturally aged details contribute to the rustic character and charm of the piece.
