Early 19th Century American Empire Flame Mahogany Chest of Drawers

A handsome early 19th-century American Empire period mahogany chest of drawers or dresser, beautifully constructed with stunning flame mahogany veneers and a rich aged patina developed over approximately two centuries.

The chest offers one large upper drawer over three additional drawers, providing generous storage within its substantial and beautifully proportioned form. The lower drawers are flanked by elegant rounded columns topped with carved accents, a distinctive architectural detail characteristic of American Empire furniture.

Paneled sides add further interest, while the chest is raised on wonderfully shaped turned cannonball feet. Large glass knob handles provide an attractive contrast against the deep mahogany. The handles are not original to the chest but are old replacements and suit the piece beautifully.

Being around 200 years old, this beautiful chest is by no means perfect, and its very imperfections are what give it an abundance of authentic old-world charm. The flame mahogany veneers, aged surfaces, old repairs, and naturally developed patina tell the story of a piece that has been used and enjoyed for generations.

A wonderful piece of early American furniture with strong architectural presence, beautiful timber, and plenty of practical storage.

 

Condition

Good antique condition.

There are losses and chipping to the veneers throughout, along with old repairs, marks, wear, splits, dings, and other age-related imperfections, all of which are visible in the photographs and contribute to the authentic character of this approximately 200-year-old chest.

Overall, the chest has developed a rich aged patina and remains solid, strong, and sturdy with age-appropriate flaws.
