Early Victorian English Mahogany Oval Pedestal Table, Circa 1840
A wonderfully characterful English mahogany parlor table dating to circa 1840, with an elegant oval top and a particularly unusual sculptural pedestal base.
Crafted from solid mahogany, the table stands on its original small casters and has developed the rich, warm patina that comes from nearly two centuries of age and use. The impressive pedestal gives the table a strong architectural presence while allowing plenty of open space beneath the generously proportioned oval top.
Originally constructed as a tilt-top table, the top has been permanently fixed in place to provide greater stability. During this alteration, an additional section was incorporated to raise the table to a practical modern dining height of 30", giving this beautiful old piece considerably more versatility for today's home.
The top has been sympathetically refinished while retaining its aged character. Years of sun exposure have naturally lightened the mahogany top in comparison with the darker pedestal base, creating an attractive contrast that speaks to the table's long history.
An exceptionally old repair to the pedestal has been reinforced with a substantial steel rod running through its center. The restoration is extremely secure and has helped preserve the table for continued use.
At 53 1/4" wide and 41" deep, the table offers a generous surface while maintaining the graceful proportions of a Victorian parlor table. It could work beautifully as a small dining table, center table, library table, or statement piece in an entry hall.
This is not a pristine piece of furniture, nor should it be. Its old repairs, losses, wear, color variation, and imperfections tell the story of a table that has survived for almost two centuries and give it an abundance of authentic old-world character.
Condition
Good antique condition.
The table is solid, sturdy, and structurally secure, with considerable age-appropriate character throughout.
There is an old, well-executed repair to the pedestal that has been reinforced internally with a heavy steel rod. The original tilt-top mechanism has been permanently fixed, and the table has been adapted to its current 30" height.
The top has been sympathetically refinished and is lighter in color than the base due to historic sun exposure.
There are losses and chips to the veneers, particularly around the base, together with old repairs, marks, wear, splits, dings, and other imperfections consistent with nearly two centuries of use.
Please review all photographs carefully, as they are considered part of the description and provide additional details regarding the mahogany, veneer, restoration, color variation, wear, and overall condition.
