Early 19th Century Georgian Flame Mahogany Chamber Pot Commode

Sale price$595.00

A fascinating piece of early 19th-century English furniture, this Georgian chamber pot cabinet or commode is beautifully crafted in flame mahogany and remarkably retains its removable ceramic chamber pot.

The cabinet has a wonderfully elegant form, with richly figured flame mahogany veneer across the contoured front and graceful scrolled feet below. Both the hinged lid and pull-out footrest are inset with a durable carpet-like fabric, providing practical surfaces for stepping or resting the feet.

The pull-out lower section allows the piece to function as a step, while the hinged upper section conceals the removable ceramic chamber pot within. Although created for a very different era of domestic life, today it could make a wonderfully unusual step stool, bedside step, or simply an intriguing decorative piece of English social history.

Adding further interest, the cabinet retains its original maker's label identifying the South East London manufacturer, a wonderful surviving detail that helps connect the piece to its original place of manufacture.

With its compact proportions, beautiful mahogany, clever construction, and remarkably complete fittings, this is an unusual survivor offering both decorative appeal and a fascinating glimpse into Georgian domestic life.

Condition

Good antique condition.

Considering its age, the commode has survived remarkably well and remains solid and sturdy. There is expected age-related wear throughout, including dings, marks, surface wear, and imperfections that contribute to its authentic character and rich aged appearance.

Examples of the wear and condition are shown in photographs #9 and #10.

Please review all photographs carefully, as they are considered part of the description and provide additional details regarding the mahogany, construction, fabric, ceramic chamber pot, wear, and overall condition.

Additional photographs are always available upon request.

Please note: Decorative accessories and styling items shown in the photographs are intended solely to help illustrate the scale and presentation of the piece and are not included unless specifically mentioned in the description.
