Late 18th Century English Georgian Solid Oak Oval Tilt-Top Table – Otto Wasserman Provenance

Sale price$1,200.00

A beautifully proportioned late 18th-century English Georgian tilt-top table, crafted from solid oak and featuring an elegant single-plank oval top, turned pedestal, and distinctive tripod base with carved spade feet.

Dating to the late 1700s, this handsome table combines traditional Georgian craftsmanship with the natural beauty and character of richly aged English oak.

The oval tabletop has been fashioned from a single solid plank, displaying prominent natural grain, warm color variations, and a wonderfully timeworn surface. More than two centuries of use have given the wood an attractive patina that adds to its authentic antique charm.

An elegantly turned central pedestal supports the top, extending into three gracefully shaped legs terminating in carved spade feet. The traditional tripod arrangement creates a refined silhouette while maintaining a relatively compact footprint.

The table retains its original brass release mechanism, allowing the top to tilt upright for convenient storage against a wall, a practical feature of Georgian occasional furniture.

An especially interesting feature is the table's documented connection to Otto Wasserman, a prominent New York fine art and antiques dealer known for sourcing quality European antiques during the mid-20th century.

An old label preserved beneath the tabletop records its association with Wasserman's Madison Avenue gallery in Manhattan, along with details of its subsequent sale and storage in New York.

This fascinating surviving documentation provides an unusual glimpse into the table's journey from Georgian England to the American antiques market.

With its elegant proportions, beautifully aged oak, and intriguing provenance, this versatile table would be equally at home beside an armchair, in a library, hallway, or traditional sitting room.

A charming and historically interesting example of late 18th-century English furniture, combining authentic Georgian craftsmanship with a fascinating chapter of its later history.

Condition

Very good antique condition, with expected signs of age and use accumulated over more than two centuries.

The solid oak tabletop displays a beautiful aged patina, with surface marks, scratches, color variations, and imperfections consistent with its considerable age.

Well-executed repairs and reinforcements have been made to the pedestal and tripod base throughout its history to maintain structural integrity and stability.

The original brass tilt-top release mechanism remains present, allowing the tabletop to be raised upright.

An old dealer's label remains attached beneath the top, documenting its association with Otto Wasserman's New York antiques business.

Overall, a solid and sturdy antique table with wonderful original character and historic repairs.
