Late 18th Century George III Mahogany Tray Top Commode
A superb example of late Georgian elegance, this mahogany tray top commode dates to the final decades of the 18th century and showcases the refined craftsmanship of the George III period.
The commode features beautifully figured, rich mahogany with a swirling grain pattern that catches the light and adds wonderful depth to its centuries-old patina. The raised edges surrounding the tray top reflect its original practical purpose as a washstand or chamber commode.
The sliding tambour door glides smoothly to reveal a concealed storage compartment, while a small drawer tucked beneath provides additional useful storage without compromising the clean lines of the piece. Original swan-neck brass handles add an elegant finishing touch and have developed a warm aged appearance that complements the mahogany beautifully.
Originally designed as a highly practical piece of Georgian bedroom furniture, today its compact proportions make it wonderfully versatile as a side table, nightstand, or accent piece.
At only 20" wide and 18" deep, it offers genuine late 18th-century craftsmanship and useful storage in a remarkably small footprint. This piece is a wonderful testament to Georgian design — functional, understated, and timeless.
Condition
Very good antique condition.
There is expected age-appropriate wear, marks, and imperfections consistent with more than two centuries of use. The tambour door functions smoothly and the hardware remains intact.
Overall, the commode has been well preserved and retains a beautiful aged patina.
