French Black Marble & Gilt Bronze Double Inkwell Desk Set
A beautiful 19th-century French desk set combining richly veined black marble with ornate gilt bronze, complete with a double inkwell, pen rest, and matching ink blotter.
The substantial black marble base is naturally accented with white veining and fitted with two decorative gilt bronze inkwells, each retaining its hinged lid. A recessed groove running around the perimeter of the base provides a practical resting place for a pen while adding definition to the handsome architectural form.
The original glass inserts from the two inkwells are no longer present, although traces of old ink remain inside, offering a wonderful reminder of the set's original working life.
Accompanying the inkwell is its matching marble ink blotter, finished with an ornate gilt bronze knob handle and remarkably retaining old blotting paper underneath.
Solid, weighty, and beautifully decorative, this handsome set would make a striking addition to a writing desk, library, study, or collection of antique writing accessories. Even without the glass inserts, it has wonderful sculptural presence and offers an evocative glimpse into the rituals of the 19th-century writing desk.
Condition
Good antique condition.
The set is solid and substantial with expected age-appropriate wear throughout. The two inkwells retain old ink residue, and there is slight surface staining within one of the pen grooves, as shown in photograph #6
The original glass inkwell inserts are no longer present. The matching blotter retains old blotting paper.
