Antique Gaudy Welsh Cup, Saucer & Side Plate Trio

A charming antique Gaudy Welsh cup, saucer, and side plate trio, imported from England and full of the colorful, whimsical character that makes this early pottery so appealing.

Gaudy Welsh pottery was originally made in England and Wales between approximately 1820 and 1860, primarily as affordable decorative tableware for working-class families. It was never intended to be fine porcelain or perfectly formed. Pieces were often thick and coarse, with pitting, uneven shapes, firing irregularities, and other imperfections that today form an important part of their distinctive character.

This pretty trio is a wonderful example, with lively hand-painted decoration in cobalt blue and burnt orange accented by touches of copper and pink luster against a white background. The bold colors and freehand decoration give each piece the wonderfully folksy, unpretentious appearance for which Gaudy Welsh is collected.

Consisting of a cup, matching saucer, and side plate, this colorful trio makes a delightful addition to a collection of Gaudy Welsh or early 19th-century English pottery and displays beautifully together.

 

Condition

Good antique condition.

There are a couple of hairline cracks on the inside of the cup and minor scratches to the saucer where the cup rests. There is no other noted damage or repair.

The pieces also display the characteristic manufacturing imperfections associated with Gaudy Welsh pottery, including irregularities in shape, pitting, and variations in the hand-painted decoration. These are shown in the photographs and contribute to the wonderfully whimsical character of this early pottery.
