Pair of Oversized Late 19th Century Cherry Armchairs

Commanding in scale and presence, this stately pair of late 19th-century American armchairs combines substantial proportions with the bold decorative character of the period.

Crafted from dark-stained solid cherry, the frames have developed a warm, mellow patina that gives the chairs both richness and depth. Their oversized proportions, open arms, turned front legs, deep seats, and high backs create a strong architectural silhouette while still offering inviting comfort.

The upholstery is particularly striking, finished in a felted damask fabric in a warm orange-yellow palette that brings a lively, almost golden quality to the chairs. The classic pattern is softened by the texture of the fabric, creating a handsome contrast with the robust cherry frames.

Ideal for fireside lounging, dramatic entryway placement, or as statement seating in a large room, these chairs have the scale and presence to anchor an interior. Their strong proportions work especially well in period homes, libraries, studies, or eclectic spaces where substantial furniture can truly shine.

A wonderfully characterful pair offering comfort, visual impact, and late 19th-century American charm.

Condition

Very good antique condition.

Both chairs are structurally sound, strong, and sturdy, with age-appropriate wear and imperfections throughout. There is some loss to the front underside of one arm, as shown in photograph #11

The upholstery remains attractive overall, with slight lightening to the fabric in some areas. Please note that one chair retains green brocade edging while the other does not.

Please review all photographs carefully, as they are considered part of the description and provide additional details regarding the frames, upholstery, trim, wear, and overall condition.

Additional photographs are always available upon request.

Please note: Decorative accessories and styling items shown in the photographs are intended solely to help illustrate the scale and presentation of the pieces and are not included unless specifically mentioned in the description.
