Davis & Galt Sterling Silver Gilt Serving Spoon, Circa 1888–1896
A beautiful late 19th-century sterling silver serving spoon by highly regarded Philadelphia silversmith Davis & Galt, distinguished by an elegant gold-washed bowl and finely decorated handle.
The reverse bears the Davis & Galt fleur-de-lis hallmark within a cartouche, a mark used by the firm from 1888 to 1896, together with "Sterling" and the patent date "July 17, 88."
The substantial 10" spoon features a gracefully scalloped bowl with a warm gold overlay, creating a striking contrast against the sterling silver. The handle is decorated with flowing floral and scrolling motifs characteristic of the emerging Art Nouveau aesthetic of the period and is finished with a monogram to the reverse.
Weighing 82.21 grams, the spoon has a pleasingly substantial feel in the hand and reflects the quality associated with Davis & Galt silver.
Both beautiful and functional, this handsome serving piece would make a wonderful addition to a collection of American sterling silver or an elegant addition to a special table setting.
Condition
Good antique condition.
