Original Mel Smilow Solid Walnut Rocking Chair for Smilow-Thielle, Circa 1960s
An exceptional original mid-century modern rocking chair, designed by renowned American furniture designer Mel Smilow for Smilow-Thielle of New York during the 1960s. Celebrated for his clean architectural lines, honest use of natural materials, and enduring craftsmanship, Smilow created furniture that has become highly sought after by collectors of authentic American mid-century design.
Constructed entirely from solid walnut, this iconic rocker beautifully showcases the warmth and character of the wood, with its original rich brown finish having developed a wonderful natural patina over the decades. The sculptural frame, gently reclined back, and gracefully curved rockers combine comfort with timeless modernist styling, reflecting Smilow's philosophy that beautiful furniture should also be exceptionally functional.
This celebrated design was featured in the American Pavilion at Expo 1967, highlighting the innovation and craftsmanship of American furniture design on the international stage. Today, it remains one of Mel Smilow's most recognizable and admired creations.
Adding an especially meaningful layer of provenance, this rocker has remained with its original owners since the 1960s. Purchased shortly after they were married while living in New York, it was one of several Smilow-Thielle pieces they selected to furnish their very first home together. Their home remained both pet-free and smoke-free throughout its ownership, and the chair has been carefully preserved while developing the beautiful patina that only decades of gentle use can create.
As is typical of Mel Smilow's work, the chair is not maker marked, as he rarely signed his furniture. Nevertheless, its distinctive construction, proportions, and design are immediately recognizable to collectors familiar with his work.
A rare opportunity to acquire an authentic and beautifully preserved example of one of America's most respected mid-century furniture designers.
