Antique Aleut Split Grass Lidded Basket, Aleutian Islands Alaska
A wonderful and rare antique split grass lidded basket attributed to the Aleut people of the Aleutian Islands, Alaska, dating to more than 100 years ago.
Small in scale but remarkable in craftsmanship, the basket is intricately woven from finely prepared split grass using techniques for which Aleut basket makers became highly regarded. The exceptionally tight, delicate weaving demonstrates both great skill and patience, particularly impressive given the diminutive proportions of the piece.
The fitted lid follows the rounded form of the basket beautifully, creating a wonderfully balanced little vessel. More than a century of age has given the natural fibers a warm, mellow coloration that adds considerably to its character.
At just over 3" in diameter, this is an especially charming example of Indigenous Alaskan basketry and a fascinating piece for a collector of Native American art, historic basketry, or ethnographic objects.
Condition
Fine antique condition.
Considering its age and delicate construction, the basket has survived remarkably well. There are a few very small breaks to the woven fibers, as shown in the close-up photographs, along with expected age-related characteristics consistent with a piece more than a century old.
