Late 19th Century Belgian Louis XV Style Carved Oak Dining Chairs, Set of Six
A delightful set of six antique Louis XV style dining chairs, handcrafted in Liège, Belgium, during the late 19th century. Beautifully restored and reupholstered, the set retains the rich age, patina, and sculptural detail that make Liège furniture so distinctive.
Each chair features an elegantly shaped back with a curved splat and intricately hand-carved shell and floral decoration. The carving is beautifully integrated into the solid oak construction, creating a refined and cohesive design rather than relying on applied ornament.
The chairs are raised on gracefully curved cabriole legs carved with acanthus details and terminating in scrolled escargot feet. Their drop-in sprung seats have been newly upholstered in a lovely peach-toned collage-style fabric that complements the warmth of the oak while introducing a soft decorative contrast.
Liège furniture is celebrated for its high-quality craftsmanship and extensive use of carved oak. It is often described as “honest” furniture because the visible ornamentation is carved directly from the solid wood rather than separately made and applied. Floral motifs, scrolling forms, and the influence of both Baroque and Rococo design are characteristic of the region’s cabinetmaking tradition.
Although inspired by the celebrated furniture produced in Liège during the 18th century, this late 19th-century set continues that tradition of refined craftsmanship and richly carved detail. Strong, comfortable, and beautifully proportioned, these chairs would bring warmth and European character to a dining room, breakfast room, or traditional interior.
Condition
Very good antique condition.
The chairs have been lovingly restored and reupholstered. All six remain strong, sturdy, and suitable for regular use, with only a low level of age-appropriate wear consistent with their history.
The oak retains a warm patina, while minor marks, variations in tone, and other signs of age contribute to the set’s authentic character.
