Hand-Painted Wheeling Porcelain Trivet by Emma Beguhn, Circa 1930s

A stunning hand-painted Wheeling porcelain trivet or large coaster, signed by award-winning porcelain artist Emma L. Beguhn, and dating to the 1930s. Beautifully decorated with vibrant wild yellow roses against a softly blended background of dusky pinks and grays, this exceptional piece is painted on a fine white porcelain blank produced by Wheeling Pottery of West Virginia.

Emma Beguhn was the niece of the celebrated porcelain artist George Leykouf, who was born and trained in Dresden, Germany, attending the renowned Dresden School of Art before working at the famous Dresden Porcelain Factory. After emigrating to the United States, Leykouf established a successful porcelain painting studio in Detroit, where he became highly regarded for his exquisite floral compositions.

Under her uncle's guidance, Emma mastered the art of hand-painting porcelain, while developing her own distinctive style, particularly her elegant hand-painted gold scrolling that became a hallmark of her work. Following George Leykouf's passing in 1922, Emma continued operating his studio for a period before establishing her own successful career as both an award-winning porcelain artist and respected teacher, inspiring a new generation of porcelain painters.

Each of Emma's pieces was individually hand-painted and signed using her married name, E. L. Beguhn, with the signature often discreetly incorporated into the floral design.

This particularly rare piece comes from an extraordinary collection acquired directly from Emma Beguhn's great-niece, now living in Cary, North Carolina. She shared that Emma lovingly sent her one hand-painted porcelain piece each year as a birthday gift during her childhood, creating a remarkable family collection with an exceptional personal provenance.

Whether displayed on a stand, incorporated into a porcelain collection, or used as originally intended, this beautiful trivet is both a work of art and an important piece of American porcelain painting history.
